Contemporary Issue, California Constitution Project

According to what Nick Goldberg and Thad Kousser said, the California Constitution is a mishmash and longer than any other constitution in United States. However, it is too hard to believe that a State's constitution does contain such a huge "overdone" problem. In order to trust and prove their criticisms, I decided to try to read the California Constitution. Then, after reading the content of the Constitution, I finally realized how disorganized, dysfunctional and unclear it is.To refer to how confused, unreadable and long-winded the California Constitution is, the representation of the Constitution will be a toilet roll which can also be a symbol of clutter. More, I am going to compose a series of slogans which both indicate the Constitution and a toilet roll. Above all, my project is pretty much like a series of advertisements which basically satirize the form and the content of the California Constitution. By changing the printing material into toilet paper, it is even clearer and easier to show the defects of the California Constitution.

AN ENDLESS SCROLL. Our Constitution is the third-longest in the world. It has been amended more than 500 times.

DON'T EVEN THINK THAT YOU CAN INTERPRET IT We're operating with a Constitution written in 1878 that has been hacked and distorted beyond recognition.

CHAOTIC AND DISCARDABLE Our Constitution does not set up a system geared to success; it sets up a system that guarantees failure.

Contemporary Issue, California Constitution : Beyond Function

We did this by creating two surveys – one to Californians and one to Taiwanese that asked about taxes. We had ten questions and surveyed 100 people between the ages of 20 to 40. Of the ten questions we asked, these 3 questions were consistently answered incorrectly. a. How does California generate revenue? i. Most people answered “property taxes” however the correct answer is “income taxes” b. Who pays the most taxes? i. Most people thought the lower middle class paid the most in taxes, however, those that make less than $18,000 pay the most state taxes. c. What do our state taxes pay for? i. Most people said taxes pay for roads. 5. From these surveys we noticed three dominant themes a. Californians do not know how they are taxed b. Californians do not know how state money is spent c. Californians do not know whether the tax system is fair or not because they do not know enough to decide.

Prototype devoloping

We choose to refine the teapot and necklace further by building quick models and hosting focus groups to get responses. To do this, we created three different models to explore. We would modify them due to feedback we received. 12. Like the teapot, we created three types of necklaces. They each use a different approach for the same message. For example, one is more literal while the others are more symbolic.

Charm necklace: There are 7 different charms that symbolize the departments that the state government funds. People can choose which charms to wear based on what they believe. It gives people an opportunity to express their opinion about state spending.

Headphones: This one also represents the different state funded departments through the clear balls/spheres. They are all connected together to say that California’s success depends upon all of these things working together for the greater good. Originally, it was a necklace and earrings, but we changed it to headphones to make it more functional.

Drop: Similar to the previous design, each piece represents a different department and the shape symbolizes how one thing flows into another. The pendant is the result – a beautiful California.
